We keep three breeds of pig comprising of five Landrace x Large white sows a pure Welsh boar and Rare Breed Berkshires.
We purchased the LR x LW sows locally in 2007 and when they were old enough mated them to the Welsh boar. In June this year we had our first litter she gave birth early one evening to 11 piglets in her ark. Our sows are left to born there pigs naturally and not in farrowing crates, nor are there farrowing bars in the arks. She proved to be an excellent mum rearing all eleven. We only had one scare when she partly laid on one and without thinking I entered her ark and rolled her off the piglet who then ran out from behind her. I suppose I could say I was lucky as some sows are very protective over their young but as with all of our sows her temperament is fantastic so she looked at me as if to say thanks.
We purchased the Berkshires from Sue Fildes from Dittisham in Devon . Sue was very knowledgeable about the breed and has had great success from
Showing her pigs throughout the country. We are thinking of perhaps showing ours next year . As far as Sue is aware we are the first in this part and possibly all of Cornwall to have these wonderful pigs and are looking forward to our first litter .
